PENLAN FIRMLY BACK ON FORM TO BEAT FALL BAY 42 to 18

Saturday 13th. September 08 saw Penlan playing their second fixture of the season away to Fall Bay on a perfect day for cricket, let alone rugby.  The home team were on a high following their 20 to 5 win away against Llangadog the week before while Penlan were hoping that they had got over their trip to Cyprus that had seem them put in a below par performance against Penybanc, despite a win.

Supervised by referee Mr. Tony Jones of Llanelli, the game got underway with Fall Ball winning the toss.  Penlan only had to wait four minutes or so before Outside Half Steve Williams scored 3 points from a penalty.

As the game continued it was apparent that the rest and hard training regime from Coach Adrian Cambriani had paid results as Penlan showed that they were getting back on form.  It took a bit of time in the early stages though as they settled down, during which Fall Bay took advantage of two penalties to notch up 6 points in a short time.

Fall Bay did all they could to deprive Penlan of possession and succeeded for a time until about 25 minutes in when Flanker Adam Glover secured the ball from a Fall Bay scrum near the line to score Penlan’s first try.

Steve Williams safely made the conversion to take the score to 10 to 6.  He was increasing the gap again within 10 minutes by securing a further 3 penalty points for Penlan.  Then, at the end of the first half, Fall Bay had the put in to the scrum near their goal line.  Penlan put on the pressure and worked the turn over, the ball finding Steve Williams who powered through the opposition ranks to secure Penlan’s second try.

Fall Ball look on wondering how Steven Williams managed to get through.

Steve hit the posts with his conversion attempt to leave the score at 18 to 6 for Penlan at half-time.

Penlan Coach Adrian Cambriani gave the boys his invaluable guidance at half-time and the effect together with the recovered fitness of the team was to bring dividends in the second half.

Although Steve Williams would have been the first to admit that his usual kicking accuracy was slightly off, his game involvement and fitness was without question.  He was in the thick of the game and within 5 minutes into the second half he scored his second try from a Fall Bay deep kick which was gathered up and taken safely across the goal line.  He easily converted his own try to take the Penlan score to 25 to 6.

Steven Williams scores his second.

Scrum-Half Bobby Scrine had been working well throughout the game and less than 10 minutes into the half was awarded with a try after securing the ball from a maul and struggle near the goal line to make it 30 to 6 and securing Penlan their bonus try point for 4 tries.

Those are Bobby Scrine's legs I promise.

To their credit, Fall Bay battled on and were rewarded less than two minutes later with their first try which went unconverted.

Penlan’s centre James Jenkins was to have quick revenge though as, within two minutes, hard work by the backs brought the ball up field and, finding himself with just enough room, James seemed to effortlessly dodge through the defence and run the ball around to land it centre posts to make it a safe conversion for Steven Williams taking the score to 37 to 11.

James Jenkins leaves Fall Bay in his wake as he sprints away.

Fall Bay can only watch as James goes for the touch down.

Flanker Rob Green had also been making his strong contribution to the game and after a determined maul to the Fall Bay line he seized the chance and stormed through to land the ball safely near the corner flag.

Rob Green firmly grounding the ball - try taking it off him if you dare !

In the final minutes of the game Fall Ball managed to claw back another 7 points from a converted try but as referee Mr. Jones blew the final whistle the game was securely Penlan’s at 42 points to 18.

With two wins from the first two games and the only try bonus point from the League so far, Penlan heads the table at this early stage (see the table under the results tab). They look to be well back on form and look forward to our game at home next week when we meet the new and boys to the league, Pantyffynnon.

All the photos from the game have been posted under the Gallery tab courtesty of hon.sec.
