PENLAN RFC DIVISION 6 WEST FIXTURES 2008/09
The fixtures for Division 6 West 2008/09 have now been drawn up by the WRU.  Select the FIXTURES tabs and click on the 2008/2009 rugby ball to find them with the full weekly list in the bottom section.

Penlan, as last season's champions, will continue to play in Division 6 West which ends the speculation on the possibility of last minute promotion although, to be fair, it was never promised when Division 6 was set up.

For 2008/09 there will be changes to the teams in Divis...

PENLAN PRESENTATION NIGHT 31/05/08
Penlan RFC held their 2007 - 2008 Presentation Night on Saturday 31st. May 2008.  While the celebrations went ahead the players and members had Club Steward Peter Martin in their thoughts.  Peter had suddenly been taken ill that morning and was rushed to Morriston Hospital with what turned out to be a brain haemorrhage.  Peter had put a lot of work into preparations for the presentation evening and it was typical of ...

PENLAN YOUTH PRESENTATION NIGHT
The Penlan Youth team held their end of season presentation at the club last evening before continuing their celebrations into the early hours in the big city.

Player's Player of the year was outside half Daniel Hadley.
Most Improved Player was prop/flanker Ben Martin.
Clubman of the Year was, hooker, Mathew Davies.

We asked Ben Martin what he thought had led his fellow players to vote him as most improved player.  After a brief reflection, he said "Dunno really,...

MARK FITZGERALD CHANGES JOBS
Mark Fitzgerald has advised us that he is changing jobs under the City and County of Swansea.  Mark, who has been the Rugby-wise Co-ordinator for Penderry since he took over from Ralph Lewis, has now being appointed as Sport Inclusion Officer for the whole of Swansea.   We understand that someone will be appointed to his old post before too long but the good news is that Mark is still prepared to help with the junior and mini rugby for the present.

Mark's other good news is that he is...

PAT ON THE BACK FROM PHIL BENNETT
Yesterday, in his final column of the season for the South Wales Evening Post, rugby legend Phil Bennett reviewed the remarkable Welsh rugby season from the outstanding triumph of our national team to the highs and lows of the regional sides.  It was a great compliment to Penlan that among such exalted teams Mr. Bennett took time out to recognize our success in WRU Division 6 West.

A highlighted part of his column said :-

As president of Felinfoel RFC, I am an...

MATCH REPORT LLANGADOG AWAY WED 30th APRIL
It had been a warm, sunny day for the away fixture at Llangadog but as the evening kick off time approached, so did the rain.  Not torrential, but enough to make conditions uncomfortable.  The pitch was in good condition (though it could have done with a bit of a mow).  It was certainly a vast improvement from the waterlogged conditions that had led to the postponement of the fixture at the end of March.

The unknown was the condition of the team, most of whom had been on a long weeken...

CIMLA GAME SAT 3rd MAY IS OFF
Our final fixture, which to be away to Cimla on Saturday 3rd. May, is now officially OFF.

The fixture had originally been for 1st. December but Cimla had been forced to called it off because the Neath/Port Talbot Council had cancelled games due to the state of the pitch following the torrential rain over that weekend.  John Davies re-arranged the fixture with them earlier this year for Saturday 3rd. May, which was the last Saturday that the WRU would allow games.  On 21st. April John ...

MATCH REPORT THU 24 APRIL HOME SOUTH GOWER
The Penlan pitch was nigh on perfect for our mid-week game with South Gower.  It was a re-arranged fixture from early December having fallen foul to the storm conditions of that weekend.  It was dry on Thursday evening but quite windy and cold.

Penlan had won the away fixture with South Gower on 12th. April by 55 to 3 but they had gained our respect by their play and determinate which we expected to be increased for this fixture.  Mid-week games are notoriously unpredictable occasions...

MATCH REPORT SAT 19th APRIL ABERAVON NAVAL HOME
Saturday 19th. April saw Aberavon Naval coming to Penlan for their re-arranged fixture from the storm conditions at the end of November.  Being at the bottom of the table they would not have been looking forward to meeting the unbeaten Penlan but it is to their credit that they turned up with the minimum of players, determined to give Penlan a game.

It was steady light rain with a slight wind as Penlan kicked off.   They set the trend with the first try coming in under 5 minutes from ...

MATCH REPORT SAT 12th APRIL AWAY TO SOUTH GOWER
Saturday 12th. April 2008 saw Penlan make their way down to South Gower for their first meeting of the league.  We knew that they were lying in 8th. place and had been beaten by the teams that we had beaten.  Nothing can ever be taken for granted but it was understandable if Penlan had not seen the game as a big challenge.

Players also, no doubt, had in mind the Worthington Welsh Districts Cup final being played at the Millenium Stadium between Bryncethin and Cambrian Welfare.  Penlan...

MATCH REPORT SAT 5th APRIL HOME TO CIMLA
Thirteenth game in the league and Penlan was at home to Cimla.  One of two teams in the fixture list that we had not played (South Gower the other) and an unknown quantity for us.  They were third in the league and still a contender to head the table.

The sun was shining, mostly, but it was cold with a cross wind that did not really favour either team, as the game got underway under the supervision of referee David Jones from Llanelli.

As Cimla kicked off both teams went al...

MATCH REPORT SAT 22/3/08 AWAY TO ABERAVON NAVAL
Certainly the coldest match day of the season so far saw Penlan cross the bridge to our away fixture with Aberavon Naval.  Not only cold, but very high winds made it far from ideal rugby weather.  Penlan were missing some star players due to a flu bug and Aberavon also had their problems getting a full team.

Nevertheless, referee Tom Simms from Llanelli started the game bang on time with the kick off to Penlan.  It was no more than three minutes before centre James Jenkins made one of...

MATCH REPORT SAT 1st MARCH 08 PONTRHYDYFEN HOME
The stormy weather overnight was followed by a fine if windy day for our third match against Pontrhydyfen this season.  The two previous away games had been wins for Penlan but we rated the opposition as a strong and determined side even though we had the advantage of being at home.

Pontrhydyfen kicked off with the advantage of a strong wind and Penlan went all out from the start to minimize that advantage.  Within 5 minutes Penlan put the first points on the board with a fine run and...

MATCH REPORT TREGARON AWAY SAT 19/2/8
Three weeks since our last game, and though we were elated with the success of the Wales national team, we were anxious to get going again.  Saturday 16th. February saw us travelling the 90 minutes or so, to the furthest location in the Division 6 west league - Tregaron.

A beautifully sunny but cold day provided ideal conditions for rugby as our bus wound the way to the ground.  We had met Tregaron at home in October and secured a 39 to 0 win.  We were not underestimating them though ...
